At that time, the only heavy equipment on the site were tractors. Almost everything was done manually. Under such harsh conditions, how to mobilise and stimulate the peasants to continue working was by all means a challenge. The literary and artistic activities that Liu Yaoru mentioned were completed by the peasant artists in Daming Commune, who formed the so-called Mao Zedong Literature and Art Publicity Team. The culture and politics of “peasants mobilizing peasants” was one of the keys that guaranteed the completion of the construction projects.

As Liu Xingwen recalls:

As soon as I learned how to play an instrument, I went to the Qiaoyu Reservoir construction site. I was in the music band. The scripts were provided by the authorities. No one dared to write a script, for fear of committing an error. All were new dramas for Qin Opera and Meihu Opera. All were for publicizing. The most relaxing and happiest time of my life was the time I spent on the Qiaoyu Reservoir construction site. I felt that art was respected. We were very united and free of worry.…We rehearsed quite a few new dramas from 1973 to 1975, all in line with current policies, such as Whole Family Constructing the Dam to support the construction of the Wei River Dam. We were very happy, of course. We designed the tunes, music, and gestures when we got a script. It didn't matter whether it was a traditional or modern drama. After we were satisfied, we put it on stage for the audience. We worked out our own productions and felt very fulfilled.
